If you work on a public holiday you get paid time and a half and another day off in lieu. If your usual work pattern includes a day that falls on a public holiday, you're entitled to receive the public holiday payment. However, if your work pattern is random then the employer can decide not to pay for the public holiday. If you're on annual leave when there’s a public holiday, you get a paid public holiday if you would have normally worked on that day, and don't lose an annual leave day.
