If your employer is resolving a conflict between you and your coworker, it’s best for your employer to separate you and the other person and meet individually. Or they can act as a mediator in a joint meeting. If they’re unsure, individual meetings are best. It’s important for your manager to avoid becoming biased by any rumors. They should listen carefully to what each employee is saying and feeling.
A good meeting should be in a time and place that will be uninterrupted. The conversation should focus on how to best work together in future. Each employee should get a chance to offer their side of the story without interruption. They should remain professional, avoid name-calling and keep calm. Either party can request a break at any time and step out of the room if they are feeling upset, angry or frustrated. During a break you can make a phone call, seek advice or get support.
Once each of you has told your side of the story, your employer should ask you both how you would solve the problem. You should say why you’re upset and what resolution would make you satisfied and ready to work. See if you can find the common ground and point it out. Set an objective for how you can move forward.
