A fixed-term agreement ends on a specific date, event or project completion. It’s only allowed if there’s a genuine reason (for example you’re filling in for someone on leave), and if your employer tells you the reason, and how and when your employment will end.
There has to be a reason for a job to be fixed-term, otherwise you can bring a personal grievance. It’s not a ‘genuine reason’ if your employer uses a fixed-term agreement to limit your rights under the Employment Relations Act or the Holidays Act, or to see if you’re right for a permanent job.
