If you’ve never worked for your employer before and they have <20 staff, your agreement can state that you’ll have a trial period of up to 90 calendar days. Any industry or job can have a trial period. You can only have a trial period if it’s agreed in good faith. It has to be in writing in your agreement with the exact number of days, and you need to sign before before you start work, otherwise the trial arrangement is invalid.
If you’re given notice in those 90 days you won’t be able to bring a personal grievance, no matter if your job ends during or after the trial. If there are problems during the trial you can use MBIE’s free mediation services. Even though you can’t bring a personal grievance for unjustified dismissal, you can still bring a personal grievance on other grounds - for example discrimination or sexual harassment.
