You have to tell your boss in writing when you want to take parental leave and for how long. If the child is going to be born to you (or your partner), you have to do this 3 months ahead of the due date, and give a certificate from a doctor or midwife.
If you’re otherwise taking over the primary care role for a child, you need to tell your boss in writing at least 14 days before it happens.
Your boss has to write back within 21 days telling you they’ll give you leave, or explaining why not. They also need to tell you whether they’ll keep your job open.
