Businesses sometimes use GPS to manage their vehicle fleets, monitor the time a driver works, or speed compliance. The Privacy Act regulates the collection, use, and storage of personal information, as well as access to it. GPS data about work vehicles can be personal information about employees.
Your employer needs good policies about how GPS is used, and make sure you’re fully aware both that the vehicle has GPS, and what the policies are around it. You should know that information is being collected and why, and how it will be used (as well as your right under the Privacy Act to request access to information about you).
Policy documents need to cover what happens out of work hours, because information relating to non-work time needs to be handled very differently from information gathered while you’re on the job.
