If several days have passed and your employer still hasn’t been able to contact you, and you haven’t contacted them, your employer could:
Advise you by phone or email and in writing to your last known address that your employment is at risk. They could say that unless you contact them by a certain time they’ll regard employment as ended due to abandonment and quote the relevant clause from your employment agreement if there is one.
If you still don’t respond, they could advise you by phone or email and in writing that, in accordance with their previous messages, they now regard your employment as terminated by reason of abandonment.
It’s very important that all sides keep a record of all attempted contact and communication so that, if should there be a dispute in the future, it is all documented. If it’s a matter of taking unauthorised leave it should be handled in the same way as any other suspected misconduct.
Remember, if an employer is going to end an employment relationship, they have to have a good reason and act fairly and reasonably.
