After the birth or when you start caring for a child under 6, you and/or your partner can take extended parental leave up to a year if you’ve worked 12 months, or up to 6 months if you’ve worked 6 months. Extended leave includes the 22 week primary carer’s leave and parental leave payments.
When two parents both qualify for extended leave, it can be taken by either or shared, either at the same time or one after the other. If both parents meet the 12-month test, they get 12 months total. If they both meet the 6-month test, they get 6 months total. If one meets the 12 and the other the 6 month test, they get 12 months but the parent who meets the 6 month test can only take up to 6 months.
