Medical retirement lets you leave your place of employer with dignity. It’s different from normal retirement because after normal retirement you don’t often work again, whereas after medical retirement you can look for a different job that you can do despite your illness or injury.
Medical retirement must be agreed by you and your employer. They should discuss it with you as a possible option before deciding on dismissal for incapacity. Your employment agreement or workplace policy may have medical retirement provisions, but even if they don’t, you and your employer can still agree to medical retirement (this should be in writing).
Medical retirement usually benefits to both parties. Your employer can hire someone else for the job sooner, and there’s less chance of a personal grievance. For you, the reason for leaving shown in your record of service and in employer references will be medical retirement, not dismissal for incapacity. A medical retirement package may include a financial payment that gives financial security while you get better and consider future options. A medical retirement package can include career support, EAP counselling or medical assistance.
