A self-employed person is someone who is engaged to perform work under a 'contract for services' (aka an ‘independent contractor agreement’) which is not a standard employment agreement ('contract of service'). Self-employed people can also be called an ‘independent contractor’ or a ‘contractor’.
The Employment Relations Authority can decide whether someone is an employee or contractor based on what it thinks the two sides intended and the evidence. The two sides can make a statement about what they think the relationship is, but it will decide.
