Your boss can agree to give you extra things as part of your job. On a farm this could be access to property, firewood or an animal. If these are non-cash benefits, they’re not seen as part of your wages when deciding if you’ve been paid minimum wage. But if you agree, your boss can take out the agreed cost from your wages payable, and in this case they are seen as part of your wages.
Your wage records should record the wages payable before any deduction is made, and any agreements on cost and deductions should be recorded separately from your employment agreement. You may need to get advice about the tax implications of deducting accommodation or other agreed costs from wages.
