The following people are protected by the Health and Safety at Work Act:
• Paid workers – This includes employees; independent contractors and subcontractors; homeworkers and outworkers; and apprentices and trainees.
• Workers on paid or unpaid work experience/trials
• Some regular volunteers – The Act protects a limited category of volunteers called 'volunteer workers'. You’re protected as one of these volunteers only if the organisation you volunteer for employs one or more staff, and you meet the definition of a volunteer worker.
